Global Volunteers' Network of Care:
PPA Graduates Continue Their Education

Benjamin, Rosa and Silvia:
In 2007, Peru "Encore" volunteers initiated a unique sponsorship program with Global Volunteers and the PPA to support needy youth who reach adulthood at the PPA. The happy result is a "first" in Peru, and an example of true cross-cultural compassion and care. The first three students accepted in the Peru Sponsorship Program now have been granted extended residency on the PPA campus while they attend classes, and have a real chance at a successful future with continued support. Their sponsors have paid for tuition, class fees, books, and school supplies through Global Volunteers. These are their stories of determination and promise:

Benjamin was placed at the PPA in 1994 when his father abandoned Benjamin's mentally disabled mother and his family. Always a serious student, Benjamin finished high school with good grades, and enthusiastically anticipates studying the field of computers after completing his current treatment for tuberculosis. With restored health, he can work toward a college degree which he believes will prepare him well for a good job and a productive future in Lima.

Rosa Maria's father dropped her off at the PPA in 1993 after her mother left their home. Despite these early challenges, Rosa's an optimitic young adult and looks forward to accomplishing her dream of becoming a nurse. She's maintained a relationship with her aunt, who has offered Rosa a place to live in her home after she completes her required university preparatory classes this year. The nursing course she's chosen runs from September, 2008 with classes on Monday through Friday until August, 2009.  Meanwhile, she continues to visit her aunt each weekend.

Silvia is 13, and is one of 10 siblings. Because of a disability and her family's poverty, she was brought to the PPA in 2005. Silvia is currently in third grade, and now attends special education classes funded by her sponsor. With continuing pledged support, Silvia will be able to attend technical school and learn a trade so she can support herself when she attains adulthood. With this added funding, and her always sunny attitude, Silvia has a very good chance for a productive and happy future.

We're very proud of these promising students, our partnership with the PPA, and the ongoing generosity of our volunteers who make these "miracles" possible. We invite your interest!
