Romania Community Projects

Global Volunteers' Romanian hosts enable you to serve children in three different and important work projects. Intergenerational groups of all ages can be valuable resources in these ways:

Care for Disabled and At-risk Children: You can make a significant contribution to the health and development of infants, toddlers and school-aged children living in healthcare or group facilities. The children in St. Nicholas Children's Hospital need your compassionate intervention in the form of play and routine care to help them overcome persistent medical challenges. At Barlad Center for Children with Disabilities, the children with hearing or sight impairments or mental disabilities such as down syndrome, autism, PKU, respond immediately to your loving stimulation and assistance with daily care. Additionally, you can help young boys and girls learn independent living skills at the Elena Farago Center, another facility for special-needs children. Here, you can assist with homework, recreational sports and cooking skills. Work assignments vary depending upon the immediate needs of the children in each facility.

Teach Conversational English in clasrooms: The George Tutoveanu primary and middle school, considered on of the best elementary and middle schools in Barlad, needs your help to teach conversational English to eager students in comfortable classrooms during the school year. You can also teach students at Alexandru Ioan Cuza Industrial High School during summer break in June, July and August at informal "camps." Help students in both groups improve their English-language skills and build on their work with previous volunteer teams. You will focus on providing the students with conversational practice in everyday subjects and real-life situations. You can spend time talking freely about life and customs in your hometown, and encouraging students to share information about their own lives. The cultural interchange is every bit as important as the language practice.

Help Improve and Renovate Care Facilities: You can help local carpenters and handymen improve assisted living facilities at the Elena Farago Center. This might include painting, tiling, building or installing windows and doors and the like. No professional experience is required.
