Teach English to Children and Teachers
China is both a land of mystery and an archeological and cultural wonder. Volunteering on a service program is a unique and meaningful way to discover this fascinating nation - home to one-fifth of the world's population. Imagine every day walking into a classroom where the students stand to greet you, and eagerly respond to your English lessons and practice sessions. After school, you can join your students in shopping or sight-seeing trips or musical events. Together with our Chinese hosts, we help leaders in Xi'an and Kunming to provide the best education possible for children and young adults. This combined effort provides Global Volunteers' team members an unprecedented opportunity to serve, and to experience China intimately, with the politics and pretenses "peeled away."You're invited to contribute to the educational development of youth, adults, teachers and also to care for mentally challenged children in a special needs school. In this way, you gain a personal understanding of the "inside" of China through unique service opportunities. Our hosts in the cities of Xi'an and Kunming will assign you to educational and child care projects that put you directly in touch with average Chinese people in day-to day- situations. What's more, you'll participate in local events and celebrations, and use your free time to explore cultural and natural attractions.
Essential Services in China
The Essential Services address the fundamental issues within a community that prevent children from developing fully. English language proficiency is now a universal graduation requirement in Chinese colleges and universities. You can assist community leaders in Xi'an and Kunming to help improve students' understanding of the English language in elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions in these ways:
- teaching conversational English to students of all ages
- teaching English skills to teachers
- caring for mentally challenged children
- promoting girls' education
